Can you change your field of study or university during your studies in the UK? - meaning when the decision for specific studies was not right after all
Surely, you have repeatedly imagined yourself in situations where you are a student at a British university and you feel that you completely do not fit in or you have the impression that the course you have chosen does not meet your expectations, and the city is boring and ugly. Fortunately, there is always the possibility to change your field of study, but it usually involves many difficulties. Therefore, it is worth acquiring the appropriate knowledge before submitting an application and also getting acquainted with the realities of the course and work in the chosen profession. However, in a situation where you are convinced of the wrongness of your initial decision, you have the following options:
Change of major within the same university
Its possibility depends on the program difference between the directions, as well as the number of available spaces on the selected course. In most cases, it is possible to transfer within one department, especially during the first year.
If, however, the programs differ significantly, it may be necessary to credit the material covered so far or even to start the studies anew from the first year, which means reapplying through UCAS. In the latter case, you never have a guarantee that you will successfully go through the UCAS recruitment process.
Transfer to another university
Universities are open to transfers of freshmen between them, as long as the candidate meets roughly the matriculation requirements at the target university.
In certain cases, the student will be required to present appropriate results from specific subjects from the current university. One conclusion follows from this - regardless of the satisfaction from the chosen course, work hard and persistently.
It's also worth remembering that it's usually impossible to transfer from a university with a huge gap in the entry criteria betwen each other, considering transferring to a better university (for example from university with requirements of 104 UCAS points to the one requiring 144). In other words, you won't transfer to a prestigious university from a mid-tier or low-tier university - unless you meet the matriculation requirements of the new university, then there are chances. 🙂
ATTENTION! Do not rely 100% on the possibility of changing direction.
Applying to an easy course/university with low thresholds with the intention of transferring to a more demanding one/university with higher thresholds is a fatal and unfortunate idea. As a rule, this is impossible or very difficult to implement. The exception may be the situation described in the above point.
